Lab Scoreboard

What is Prometheus?

Prometheus is an open-source system monitoring and alerting toolkit originally built at SoundCloud. Since its inception in 2012, many companies and organizations have adopted Prometheus, and the project has a very active developer and user community. It is now a standalone open source project and maintained independently of any company. To emphasize this and to clarify the project's governance structure, Prometheus joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2016 as the second hosted the project, after Kubernetes.

What is CVE-2021-29622?

In version 2.23.0, Prometheus changed its default UI to the New UI. To ensure a seamless transition, the URL's prefixed by /new redirect to /. Due to a bug in the code, an attacker can craft a URL that can redirect to any other URL in the /new endpoint. Users who visit a Prometheus server with a specially crafted address can be redirected to an arbitrary URL. The issue was patched in the 2.26.1 and 2.27.1 releases. In 2.28.0, the /new endpoint will be removed completely. The workaround is to disable access to /new via a reverse proxy in front of Prometheus.

Lab Environment

In this lab environment, the user is going to get access to a version of Prometheus UI instance vulnerable to an Open Redirect vulnerability, identified by the CVE ID CVE-2021-29622.

Objective: Leverage the /new endpoint of the Prometheus UI to redirect to the website of your choosing!

Instructions

  • This lab is dedicated to you! No other users are on this network :)

  • Once you start the lab, you will have access to a Prometheus UI instance

  • Do not leverage the vulnerability in this lab to target unauthorized services/machines

The following activities are strictly prohibited on this website unless otherwise explicitly stated as allowed in the mission statement:

  • Using automated scanners
  • Using brute force attacks
  • Denial of Service attacks
  • Attacking other student machines in challenges where you might achieve a shell on the vulnerable system

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
