Lab Walkthrough Video:

Host Intrusion Detection Systems can provide a wealth of information about a running system. In some cases, they can help identify anomalies which could have been caused by a security incident.

A user account on a host had been compromised and was used to perform some malicious activity on the host machine. Analyze the AIDE HIDS logs to unearth the suspicious activity. Please start the lab, answer the below questions and submit the flags to verify:

  1. A user account had been compromised and was used to perform some malicious activity on the host machine. What was the name of that user account?
  2. The compromised user account had the rights to execute a binary as root. Provide the full path of that binary.
  3. The '/etc/passwd' file on the host machine had been modified by the attacker and a backdoor account had been created. What was the name of that account?
  4. The attacker had scheduled a cron job to run on a daily basis. Provide the full path of the script associated with that cron job.
  5. The attacker had added a malicious DNS nameserver on the host machine. What was the IP address of that nameserver?

Guidelines:

  • AIDE logs are present in /var/log/aide/aide.log

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
