Lab Walkthrough Video:

Performance monitoring and tracking tools can provide a wealth of information about a running system. In some cases, they can help identify anomalies which could have been caused by a security incident.

In this lab, we will analyze Bashreadline script's trace logs to unearth suspicious activity. Please start the lab, answer the below questions and submit the flags to verify:

  1. A suspicious user had logged into the system and had downloaded some files using wget. What is the name of that user?
  2. The suspicious user prepended a directory to the PATH environment variable. What is the complete path of that directory?
  3. The suspicious user downloaded some files from a remote machine using wget. What is the domain name of the remote machine?
  4. The suspicious user had also downloaded a script from the same remote machine in /tmp directory. That script was executed as soon as it was downloaded. Provide the complete path of that script.
  5. Retrieve the flag from the script downloaded in /tmp directory.
  6. The suspicious user broke into another user’s account after a couple of unsuccessful attempts. What is the name of the compromised user?
  7. What is the name of the kernel module loaded by the suspicious user?

Technical Support for this Lab:

There is a reason we provide unlimited lab time: you can take as much time as you need to solve a lab. However, we realize that sometimes hints might be necessary to keep you motivated!

We currently provide technical support limited to:

  • Giving hints for a lab exercise
  • In rare circumstances, if you have totally given up (NO!!!) then tell you how to solve it. This will be limited to sharing the solution video or lab report
  • A lab exercise fails to load or has errors in it

If you need technical support, please email  attackdefense@pentesteracademy.com  clearly mention the name and link of the lab exercise and other essential details. The more descriptive you are, the faster we can help you. We will get back to you within 24 hours or less.
